This Wednesday September 21, 2022 is World Alzheimer’s Day, an opportunity to raise awareness around and educate about Alzheimer’s disease, which affects more than 40 million people worldwide.

In Spain, Alzheimer’s is by far the most common type of neurodegenerative dementia, with some 800,000 people in the country suffering from the disease according to the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN).

While it’s true that there is still no known single specific cause of Alzheimer’s, scientists have proved that there are several risk factors which make it more likely to develop dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

These include obesity, smoking, having high blood pressure, social isolation and – perhaps most surprisingly – hearing loss and impairment.

But why exactly are hearing problems a risk factor in developing dementia?

The experts at Sontec, a hearing aid and audiology company based in Fuengirola and La Cala de Mijas on the Costa del Sol, point out that there’s actually a very good reason for this.

“Sound has the power to stimulate the brain,” they say. “Whether it’s through music, the sound of birdsong or a good conversation, being connected to the sounds of the world around us help to keep us engaged and active.”

Conversely, hearing loss can cause damage to health, especially in the elderly. That’s why it’s especially important for anyone over the age of 50 to regularly check their hearing.

“The key to a better quality of life lies in the early detection and intervention of hearing loss.”

Sontec offers free in-depth hearing tests, and based on the results can recommend the best hearing solution to the problem according to the individual’s needs.

With highly qualified audiologists and audiology professionals registered in both Spain and the UK, they supply a wide range of hearing aids and provide hearing aftercare and servicing for auditory devices, as well as stocking advanced assistive listening devices from magnetic loop systems and phones to adapted door bells and TV listeners, to ensure you get the hearing help you need to maintain your quality of life.
